Atterbeary won nearly 90% of Howard’s election precincts in June primary
Precinct-level data from the June primary election shows Democrat Vanessa Atterbeary, who decisively beat her three opponents in the Howard County executive race, maintained a stronghold in 60 of the county’s 67 election precincts.
She received the strongest support in the southeastern part of the county, winning about 70% or more of the votes in precincts covering Elkridge, Jessup and Laurel. One of her largest wins came in Laurel, where she won 385 of 519 votes. She also won 64% of the votes in the Fulton precinct.
Atterbeary won 54.91% of the vote for the Democratic nomination, leaving two County Council member challengers, Deb Jung and Liz Walsh, behind, with 22% and 21.31% of the vote, respectively. A fourth candidate, Bob Cockey, finished in a distant last place.
With no Republicans in the race, and all of the primary votes counted, Atterbeary is poised to be the next county executive. She would be the first Black woman in that role in Howard County. Atterbeary is a former state delegate.
